I Heard the Owl Call My Name ... from Nicole Kidman's Dress
We've now hit that special time of the year when Hollywood gathers together in a (seemingly) never-ending series of self-worship orgies, otherwise known as awards shows. Honestly, I really don't give a rat's ass about the majority of the awards. The thing I love about the obnoxiously large volume of awards ceremonies is the corresponding volume of couture gowns on display ... and the avalanche of catty comments that go with the display of said couture gowns.
Oh, believe me, it's not all bad. At last night's Golden Globes, Reese Witherspoon was a knockout in her sexy "Jessica Rabbit" number. Charlize Theron once again proved that she looks great in just about anything, and Angelina Jolie left her funeral gear at home and wore something that was actually pretty fabulous. See them all, plus more, here.
But, that's enough of the nice stuff. Can we talk about Nicole Kidman and her fancy totem pole of a gown, please?
From a distance, Nicole cuts a hell of a fine figure ... but ...
You see, while I think Kidman's dress did a wonderful job of displaying just how trim her body really is these days, I swear I saw the visage of an owl staring at me from the bodice of that dress. I said as much to a few folks, and was promptly told that I was smoking crack.
I am NOT smoking crack, my friends ... at least not these days. Take a closer look. I've even outlined the parts that struck me as "owlish" for those who aren't really into abstracts.
Can you honestly tell me you don't see it now?
So, now that we agree Nicole is in fact wearing an owl face, we must ponder what it means. Is this a high-class shout out to Hooters? Surely, Ms. Kidman is not a fan of THAT restaurant franchise. Perhaps Nicole just wanted to bear the essence of the owl as she headed out into the night. Yes, that must be it.
After all, the owl is associated with wisdom and truth and is the ancient Greek symbol for the goddess of wisdom, Athena. I like where you're going with this, Nicole. I like it very much. What a great way to start a conversation about greek mythology! However, in my opinion, the best way for you to display wisdom would have been to pick a different dress, and that's the truth!
Yep, you may call me "Athena" if you like.
Wisdom and "owling" are not linked in any way ... just so you know.

Wow, that is totally an owl dress!
I thought you might see it my way. :)
I first thought it looked like a cartoon bug but I see the owl now. Funny!
I actually have seen Reese look much better and Nicole look much worse. Perhaps they are equaling out.
And...Charlize looks much better now that she isn't orange ( I cannot get her Oscar look out of my head!0.
Nicole's dresses make me barf. She used to wear good stuff but she sucks now..
Great novel by Hal Borland, by the way. Try to catchit if you are unfamiliar.
I though she looked pretty good for wearing a little animal.
I saw that dress again and, you're right! It certainly looks like an owl.
